From May 1940 to April 1941, Orwell and his wife Eileen rented 18 Dorset Chambers in Chagford Street. It was on the top floor and therefore dangerous during the Blitz. He was working for Time and Tide writing theater reviews and joined the Local Defence Volunteers while living here. From here, the they moved to 111 Langford Court.
