Comments: Reply from Safeway

Dear WHCC:

I offer the following observations of Safeway over the past 7 years living in the area. Safeway has not been a good neighbor in that they are not maintaining their property. Aside from the vacant lot currently under consideration as a gas station, their grounds are absolutely covered with garbage, particularly on the NW 83rd and Mary Ave NW sides. I've called in graffitti several times over the past year on this end of the property and Safeway as of yet has done nothing to clean it up(graffitti on NW 83rd entrance lighting has been there for about a year; park bench is typically covered with trash). Bottom line is that Safeway exhibits a general apathy towards the upkeep of their property. Their lack of regular maintenance of their property by not cleaning up graffitti and litter has been and will continue to be a magnet for more graffitti and litter for our neighborhood. From the last near decade of casual neglect of their property, I don't see any reason to expect any different behavior in their new project.

Thank you for considering my comment.

I don't even know why Safeway is interested in putting a gas station at this location, it's not good business sense. Just a little further up 15th, there are three gas stations. There is already a lot of competition.

Secondly, the people who shop at Safeway live in the neighborhood. If you upset them by detracting from the looks and pedestrian feel of the area as well as creating more traffic, they will just start shopping at QFC. That will be my response and others as well.

Safeway, stick to what you know, groceries. Don't stick us with something we don't want.

Sincerely,

I have attended a large number of neighborhood meetings over many years regarding Safeway's plans for the property in question. Safeway has not honored any committments to the upkeep of the site and infact have shown a complete disregard for the concerns of the neighbors.

I continually hear that Safeway has conducted surveys of their customers at the 15th and 85th street site and found that they are in favor of a fuel center at the site. No representative of Safeway has ever polled me and I have never seen a survey or comment form available to the customers in the store regarding the building of a gas station.

I have been a customer of this store for the last thirty years and while I don't claim to know everyone that shops there, I have yet to hear any customer say they are in favor of a gas station. Who have you been talking too?
